Prettiest Autumn Walks in Hampshire

Nothing says a cosy autumn day quite like a family walk, lined with orange trees, crunchy leaves and a steamy seasonal drink. For conker picking trails, beautiful viewpoints or to just enjoy the colours of autumn at their best whilst the children have plenty of space to explore, Hampshire has something suitable for the whole family. Why not make one of these walks your own and go on a colour walk or a sensory walk, whether it’s the wind through he leaves or the sparkly dew on a spider’s web, take time this season to slow down and connect with nature together. Read on to hear some of our favourite trails in Hampshire.

Of course, at the top of our list has to be Tall Trees Trail at The New Forest. Here you can surround yourself amongst the oldest trees at the park and hear nothing but beautiful wildlife all around you. Take a moment to stand still and take everything in, the sounds of birds, the squirrels and the scent of the cool air. This circular route is a well known must-visit place at this time of year and it’s no wonder.Spot how the leaves change from green to yellow or collect pinecones and fallen foliage ready for fun crafts at home. If you need inspiration, check out our Leaf Print craft, our Leaf Rubbings craft or our Blackberry craft. on our instagram, @famshirefuntime.

For another autumnal adventure in the heart of The New Forest National Park, is Bolderwood Deer Spotting Walk. This family friendly, flat trail showcases the warm glowing colours of autumn in a magical way. At the end of the walk, you will find a viewing platform to spot deer, overlooking a stunning meadow where they tend to gather for food. Crunchy leaves, free parking and an ice cream van on busy days, it’s a no brainer for an easy but memorable family day out.

Another great circular route is around Harewood Forest. Starting in Andover, follow the waymarks to the forest and follow the route. Here you can really see the colours of autumn bloom and it’s just beautiful. On this route you pass through fields and fields of greenery, making this walk perfect for when the sun is setting. As a dog friendly route, why not bring your furry friend and a flask of your favourite spiced seasonal drink and wander through the Victorian trees.

The Woodland Walk at The Vyne is a gorgeous area to walk around all year round however, it is particularly impressive this time of year. The explosion of yellows and oranges is sure to amaze little explorers. This circular route is a gentle stroll with concrete and dirt paths which are flat, perfect for the whole family, including the dog (but they must be kept on a lead). It should be noted; with wetter conditions the paths can become very muddy so take care and pack appropriate footwear.

In Basingstoke, the Canal Towpath Trail offers the most perfect escape for families looking for colourful scenery. Watch the leaves fall into the canal or wander through the peaceful woodlands, both of which are flat and well maintained, making this an ideal route for families with little ones on scooters or bikes. Let your kids see how many ducks they can spot in the canal. There are also loads of cafes along the canal, you’ll be spoilt for choice or bring a flask of hot chocolate and choose from the array of picnic spots along the way!

As we know, the autumn months between September and October are the time when brown, shiny treasures drop from horse chestnut trees and Hampshire have a huge selection of places to find them. We recommend the New Forest. The New Forest and its vast open woodland is a perfect place to start collecting conkers but only take what you need as wildlife families love conkers too! Visit villages like Brockenhurst or Lyndhurst to find horse chestnut trees lining paths and parks, so be sure to pack a picnic for your trip. The flat paths of the parks make for an ideal family day out.

Mottisfont is another magical place for little ones to explore and go on conker hunts. This National Trust estate has plenty of horse chestnut trees and fallen foliage as well as wide paths and nature themed play areas. As you go deeper into the gardens, you’ll find yellow hue meadows and ancient trees. There are cafes and picnic benches available here too for that pick me up coffee before or winding down hot chocolate after your hunt.

Please note: Tread lightly when looking for conkers. Conkers provide nutrients for some wildlife so only take what you need.

Sensory walks

Sensory walks can be a really good idea when taking your little explorers out this season, let them explore the beauty of the season with all 5 senses. Take a notepad and some crayons for them to write down what they see, what they smell, what they hear. Can they hear the crunchy leaves beneath their feet? Can they smell the earthy scent on the leaves? Perhaps take a little basket and collect treasures like acorns, conkers, pinecones and crispy leaves and turn a walk this autumn into a sensory adventure.

Colour walks

Or pick a colour to look out for. Whether that’s the golden yellow on the crunchy leaves or fiery burnt red on the trees, ask your little ones to collect things in an autumn shade. This can be a calming way to educate, encourage curiosity and burn off some energy. As previously mentioned, places like Mottisfont and The New Forest offer wide paths and beautiful scenery this time of year, ideal for little legs and pushchairs.
