Family Friendly Winter Walks in the South of England
Our Favourite Cosy Trails

Hot chocolate season is here, and this can only mean one thing, the South of England is turning into a wonderland of frosty walks. Explore the ancient forests or walk along the rivers and discover the best family friendly walks this winter has to offer. From woodland strolls to beautiful countryside trails, there’s something magical about wrapping up warm and heading outdoors.

Itchen Navigation Trail

Location: Guildhall, The Broadway, Winchester, SO23 9GH

This trail has a beautiful combination of nature and history. Once used to transport goods and is now a wonderful place for visitors to take in the stunning surroundings. Whether you take the route through meadows or woodlands, it is a great opportunity for families to enjoy a bit of adventure this winter. You can join the trail at several points but if you’re just wanting a bit of fresh air and a slow stroll, we recommend the route between Winchester city centre and St. Catherines Hill. It is a great, back and forth walk that isn’t too long. If you’re visiting in December, you could even combine your walk with the Winchester Christmas Market for an extra special trip out. There are puddles to splash in and open spaces to run around, so what are you waiting for?!

Alice Holt Forset

Location: Alice Holt Forest, Bucks Horn Oak, Farnham, GU10 4LS

Alice Holt Forest is a must, especially now the Stick Man Trail is on. Stick Man is lost and needs help finding his way back to his family tree. This is such a great interactive family adventure, since it is only 1.5km long, it makes for an ideal afternoon outing. Let your little ones run wild among the trees in Alice Holt Forest, it really is the perfect winter adventure. There are loads of flat trails ideal for little legs and wheelchair and pushchair users. The Habitat Trail is a great walk for children as it has lots of play sculptures along the way. The Gruffalo Sculpture Trail is always a great hit too with younger ones. There is a cosy cafe on site too, serving hot chocolates and warm lunches ready for your visit.

Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary, New Forest

Location: Bolderwood Arboretum Ornamental Dr, Lyndhurst SO43 7GE

There are very few places more enhancing than winter in the New Forest. Try the Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary Trail, it’s an easy circular route where families can spot deer in the wild. The trail is perfect for pushchairs and wheelchairs users too. There are also loads of picnic benches, so why not make a day of it, pack your favourite snacks, fill a flask of hot chocolate and enjoy looking out onto the amazing views here.

Queen Elizabeth Country Park, Petersfield

Location: Gravel Hill, Horndean PO8 0QE

Queen Elizabeth Country Park is really great for families, the forest trails here have a wide range of walks from gentle loops beneath the trees to hillier routes up Butser Hill, on a clear day the views from here are incredible. By the visitor centre, there is a great adventure play area for little ones to burn off extra energy. Dogs are welcome too! For families wanting a steady stroll, we recommend the short woodland trail. The length of this walk is 3km and takes around an hour, it is great for families with little ones who just want a bit fresh air. The trail is clearly marked on the ground, alternatively, you can pick up a leaflet onsite. This is a wonderful place to make the most of the cooler months together.

Staunton Country Park

Location: Staunton Country Park, Petersfield, Havant PO9 5HD

This park is absolutely perfect for younger families because there is a wonderful mix of short walks, open fields and plenty of play areas. Most of the walks are fully accessible and pushchair friendly. Be sure to check the park’s event calendar, there are regular family trails and activities during school holidays. The Staunton Circular walk is ideal for duck and squirrel spotting, the wide paths let little ones run around and explore safety. Afterwards, why not warm up at The Tea Rooms at the Coach House or enjoy a packed lunch at one of the picnic tables. This park has everything to make a great family outing this winter, free parking, nearby facilities and hot chocolates.
