Cycling in Hampshire

Cycling has to be one of best ways to explore Hampshire to its full potential, whether you’re part of the cycling community or haven’t picked up a bike in a few years, there is a route for everyone. From scenic countryside lanes to safe, flat, traffic-free paths. So why not hire or dust off your bikes and get exploring? We’ve put together a list of our favourite trails and top recommendations for your next two-wheeled adventure.

Most of the routes mentioned below avoid busy roads and there’s some great options for little legs or nervous riders. Many have nearby parking and facilities, so you’re never too far from toilets or a well needed sit down in a cafe.

Family friendly routes

The New Forest has loads of cycling paths to explore, a family favourite is the Brockenhurst to Lyndhurst loop, here you can expect to cycle through postcard villages and spot beautiful seasonal flowers and even say hello to friendly local natives (cows, ponies and horses). One of the most popular tracks has to be the Brockenhurst to Beaulieu loop, a well surfaced, flat cycle path, perfect for the whole family. Other popular cycling routes in The New Forest include Burley Hill Fort Loop, Brockenhurst to Lyndhurst Loop, the Hawkhill Trail and the Old Railway Cycle Route perfect for wildlife spotting and picnics.

Or go for a cycle alongside the beautiful Southsea coastline and enjoy lots of ice cream stops along the way. This completely flat coastal path is perfect for an afternoon adventure. Not far from the Canoe Lake Playground and the South Parade Pier, why not stop off for some extra fun… and some chips!

Stretching from West Meon to Wickham, Meon Valley trail is another fantastic route which offers scenic views through the South Downs National Park, with mostly flat, wide paths; it’s an ideal route for confident young riders. Packed with loads of places to stop, snack and hydrate. The Meon Valley Trail is known for its natural scenery, keep the little ones busy and see how many different wild flowers you can spot along the way!

Stop off for a sweet treat!

Whilst on route why not try some of the best bakeries and cafes Hampshire has to offer. A firm favourite with local riders along the Brockenhurst to Lyndhurst loop is The Bakehouse. You can find rustic sourdough, freshly baked pastries and great coffee. They also have outdoor seating and places to park your bikes. Our top pick has to be the almond croissant or the sausage roll – yum! Or why not pick up a coffee and a treat at The Sett in Lyndhurst, on your route through The New Forest. They have amazing vegan treats and specialty coffee on the menu. Whilst you’re in Meon Valley, we recommend The Beech Cafe in Queen Elizabeth’s Country Park, perfect for cyclists riding through the South Downs. This is a great spot for like minded riders to fuel up with a view.

Fancy a treat with a view? The Long Barn in Alresford, is our top recommendation, especially if you’re riding from Winchester towards Meon Valley, if you visit between June – August you’ll find gorgeous lavender farms and there’s lots of space to park your bikes and relax.

Our top tips

  • Pack snacks and water.
  • Don’t forget the helmets.
  • Check your tyres before you go.
  • Pack layers… British weather can be unpredictable.
  • Bring a basic bike repair kit and first aid kit.
  • Check opening times for cafes.
  • Carry cash and card as some bakeries don’t take all payments.
  • Bring locks for your bikes.

Exploring Hampshire on two wheels has to be the best way to discover the hidden gems. So, whether you’re exploring leafy forests or cycling by the sea, there’s a route waiting for you and your little riders.
